‘Soft-capping’ is a historical preservation method wherein turf made of mosses, grasses and soil is place onto the top of the architecture to preserve the stone from degradation. This method drew me to Hailes Abbey a 15th c ruin as a place of inquiry into the facilitation of preservation with nature, as well as it’s terminology; soft. As a historical preservation method soft-capping is juxtaposed with the traditional ‘hard-capping’, where layers of petroleum based paint ‘seal’ the stone or fix it within time.
